Sandford Orchards is a traditional farm business, pressing juices and ciders for an ever growing market. Their methods are simple and so is their ethos: ‘we only bottle the best’. They are a family business full of passion for their products and believe that Devon ciders and juices are the best in the world – so we want you to taste them!
They grow lots of fruit including, obviously, many varieties of cider apple, but they also have a further 20 acres of dessert fruit including pears, plums and cherries. They grow fruit on their own land and rented land, and are most proud of the orchards which they have helped to save from extinction. They also strongly support bio-diversity in their orchards because they are a permanent habitat and, as they are naturally full of trees, they support a huge number of micro-flora, fungi, mosses lichens, insects and therefore song birds, small mammals and thus predators such as badgers, foxes, owls and other large birds of prey. Most of their orchards are traditional large trees and so have an extremely important role in the winter months on stock farms. The trees provide natural shelter and because orchards have traditionally surrounded the farmhouse it means that they are the ideal place to put young stock such as calves or ewes with lambs.
‘Slack Ma Girdle’ is one of our favourite Devon cider apples. Here it is blended with other varieties to create our driest cider, for the true aficionado. Ripe apple and refreshing citrus flavours lead to a satisfying bitterness and a long finish.

Artisan cider made by selecting the best local fruit combined with years of experience to craft ciders that our traditional, yet suit the modern palate.
The Pig Squeal is named after the delightful sound of pigs when they come across some windfall apples! Like those pigs this is full of character. A rich bronze cider that is smooth as it is tasty. Beautifully balanced with a satisfyingly rounded finish.

Born out of a passion for making cider in the best possible way, combined with belief in the quality of Scottish produce, and asking ‘why not?’, came Thistly Cross Cider; Scotland’s award winning farmhouse ciders. Established as a collaboration between farmer, Ian Rennie, and artist-turned-cidermaker, Peter Stuart, in 2008, Thistly Cross has gained a reputation for making ciders that people rave about.
Based at the Cider Shed on South Belton Farm, in the heart of the East Lothian countryside, they are involved in every aspect of making their award-winning Scottish farmhouse cider. From pressing the Scottish apples and strawberries, to achieving the smooth, balanced Thistly Cross flavour by fermenting with Champagne yeast then maturing for six months; they’ve invested at every step of the cider-making process, from apple to cider.

It all started in 1916, where Sam Inch started to make cider here at Western Barn in Winkleigh. Times were hard and apples were paid in lieu of a salary. A glut and tumbling prices meant Sam needed to recognise the potential in his only asset, so he borrowed the necessary equipment and made some cider- two hogshead which eventually found their way into the cellars of the White Hart Inn.
Word of mouth was, and still is a powerful marketing agent. It was not long before other public houses were carrying Sam Inch’s cider. In 1952 Inch’s Cider was first poured into bottles; the distribution network was expanding through Eggesford station.
In January 1999 The Winkleigh Cider Company was born. Cider making has gone back to it roots to produce proper ciders and Scrumpies and is now named “Sam’s Cider”. The 4 remaining 100 year old oak vats, now take pride of place here at Winkleigh Cider Company, as well as all its history.
