What started as a hobbyist’s experiment quickly became much more serious and an expanded selection of draught and oak-matured bottled ciders followed – each refined over time. The Hecks family have been making traditional Somerset farmhouse cider in Street for six generations, since 1840.
They make their cider by blending juice from apples all grown locally in the farms orchards. The cider is fermented in wooden barrels and sold draught from the wood.
Hecks farmhouse cider is one of the few cider farms to still to use the old traditional methods of cider making.
They have recently won prizes at the: Camra’s National Champion Cider and Perry Competition’s, Royal Bathe and West Show, Devon County Agricultural Association and many other local produce events.

By the early 1900s a churchman was making cider from locally produced apples at the Heathfield Rectory. And in 1911 the Reverend Cornish (for it was he) joined forces with the co-operative to incorporate the “Taunton Cider Company”, set up to produce their now sought-after cider commercially.
After World War I, production of non-sparkling cider continued, using the original recipe and traditional wooden barrels – but the method of the day only allowed for distribution to local public houses in the wider Taunton area.
The Taunton Cider Company effectively disappeared until it was re-registered in 2015 by a group of cider enthusiasts.
Made from Dabinett, Yarlington Mills and Harry Masters’ Jersey apples.
